A recent study showed that the risk of erectile dysfunction (ED) among men with coronary artery disease (CAD) was nearly twice as high as that for men without ED.
The study, by the U. S. National Institutes of Health, found that men who took the drugs sildenafil (Viagra), vardenafil (Levitra), and tadalafil (Cialis) had a significantly higher risk of ED, compared to those who took a placebo or placebo. The researchers also found that those who took sildenafil, tadalafil, and vardenafil had a substantially higher risk of developing ED compared to those who took placebo.
The findings, published Tuesday in theJournal of the American Medical Association, showed that sildenafil, tadalafil, and vardenafil could reduce the risk of ED in men with CAD and those who had not taken either drug for at least two years. In other words, men who took the drugs had a substantially greater improvement in the risk of ED compared to men who took placebo.
But in a separate study, researchers looked at a group of patients in the same institution who did not take either drug for at least two years. The findings showed that those who took sildenafil, tadalafil, and vardenafil had a significantly higher risk of ED compared to those who took placebo.
The study was sponsored by the National Institute for Health and Care Research, and was presented at the American Heart Association’s Cardiovascular Events and Prevention Web-site, Tuesday.
“We are pleased to see that men who are on sildenafil, tadalafil, and vardenafil who have a higher risk of ED than men who are not on these drugs are getting treatment that can be used to lower the risk of ED,” Dr. Peter C. Leucht, chairman of the National Institutes of Health’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER), said in an interview. “But we don’t have any data that supports the findings from the previous studies.”
The study was led by researchers at Columbia University Medical Center in New York, and was published in the journalJAMA Internal Medicinein February.
The researchers analyzed data from the clinical trials of the drugs sildenafil and tadalafil, which are the most commonly used ED treatments.
Their study looked at 2,979 patients with coronary artery disease who were randomly assigned to receive sildenafil, tadalafil, or a placebo for 12 weeks. In the sildenafil group, the risk of ED was significantly lower than in the tadalafil group, with a significantly greater improvement in erectile function compared to the placebo group. The researchers also noted that those who took the drugs had a significantly higher risk of ED compared to those who took the placebo.
The investigators concluded that the results of the studies were “well-supported.”
“This is the first report of a large, well-designed randomized controlled trial on sildenafil, tadalafil, and vardenafil to examine the safety and efficacy of these medications in the treatment of ED,” Leucht said. “We believe that the current study is the first to show that sildenafil and tadalafil are safe and effective treatments for ED in this population.”
The drugs have not yet been studied in patients with CAD or those who have not responded to other ED medications.
CAD is not the only ED problem that has been studied and found to be increasing.
“We’ve found that this is the only treatment for ED,” Leucht said. “Our research shows that these drugs are safe and effective in the treatment of ED in men with CAD.”
Researchers said the drugs may have some other uses, including as a treatment for men with heart failure and patients with hypertension. More research is needed before the drugs are included in ED treatment plans, according to Leucht.
“We know that the FDA does not approve the use of sildenafil in patients with hypertension, so it’s not known whether sildenafil will be used in the treatment of hypertension,” he said.
Vardenafil, sold under the brand name Levitra, is not recommended for use in men with CAD.
